Chafee Grant for Foster Youth

The California Chafee Grant helps pay for college or career technical training (CTE) for current or former California foster youth. Chafee Grants don’t have to be paid back.

Who qualifies: If you are or were in foster care after the age of 16 and are under age 23 when you apply, you may qualify for up to $5,000 per year if you are enrolled at least half-time.

What schools can you attend: You can use your Chafee Grant at any eligible California college or university, or career or technical school, as well as schools in other states. All California Community Colleges, CSU and UC campuses qualify.

Eligible uses: You may use your grant for tuition costs as well as living expenses such as child care, rent and transportation while you’re in school.

To apply: Go to Applications are accepted for the following year beginning on October 1. Funds are limited and so the sooner you apply, the more likely you are to get a grant. Students are strongly encouraged to apply by March 2.
